Overview of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)

The PANSS is a 30-item clinical rating scale used to assess the severity of symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia1

What it measures: positive symptoms (7 items), negative symptoms (7 items), and general psychopathology symptoms (16 items)1

How it’s administered: a clinician interviews the patient and rates the severity of each symptom on a 7-point scale rated from 1 (absent) to 7 (extreme)1

Clinical use: primarily used to assess the severity of certain core symptoms of schizophrenia; also is commonly used to measure treatment effects and can aid in the management of schizophrenia2

PANSS factors: factor analyses of the PANSS by Mohr and Marder have further refined symptom/item categorization into dimensions/factors of schizophrenia. Marder includes selected symptoms from both the negative and general psychopathology scales, while Mohr combines selected symptoms from the positive and general psychopathology scales1,3,4
